Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) have made a huge impact on the telecommunications market as we know it. Leveraged by regulations that are determined to keep competition fierce, MVNOs are here to stay. This thriving segment holds great opportunity for MVNOs to monetize available bandwidth on the existing infrastructure. Amdocs’ offering specifically addresses these relatively smaller but sophisticated customers.

MVNOs introduced aggressive competition into the telecommunications arena by offering unprecedented low prices. This led to consumer price cuts, and in parallel dragged down telecom revenues and profits. But there was also an opportunity here, and service providers that were fast enough to identify it and act accordingly suffered less, or not at all. With the increase in acquisitions and consolidation efforts, regulators are even more inclined to use MVNOs as a buffer to make sure competition stays intense and prices remain low. It is clear that MVNOs are here to stay, but what’s next for them?

Serving MVNOs as well as Mobile Virtual Network Enablers (MVNEs), we engaged with Telesperience to deliver a comprehensive research report to provide the hard facts backed by numbers.

The most compelling, overarching conclusion was that MVNOs can no longer just focus on offering lower prices. Although many of them will still be very competitive in terms of price, MVNOs have realized that they need to move forward and offer their customers additional benefits, services and products.

In order to do that, MVNOs will require better business support systems (BSS). Although 71% of MVNOs developed their billing infrastructure in-house, many are still struggling with time to market challenges, required flexibility and total cost of ownership. Service providers, as enablers to MVNOs, must take these challenges into consideration if they want to leverage this revenue stream.

The Amdocs offering to MVNOs addresses these points on all fronts, and reflects MVNO’s new requirements in terms of product abilities, flexibility and pricing.
